Although there are many components in house dust to
which people may be allergic, the most important is
the dust mite. The dust mite is microscopic
and therefore cannot be seen by the human eye.
Adults live for two to three months, during which
time the female mite can lay 25 to 50 eggs every
three weeks. A clean home goes a long way towards
both minimizing exposure to allergens and
helping you stay symptom-free, below your "allergic
threshold." Dust mites cannot live for long or
in large numbers on hard surfaces such as wood or
vinyl because they will soon die of dehydration.
